Anyone who has been walking around Belfast Town Centre over the past week has probably been able to work out by the proliferation of rainbow flags adorning hotels, bars and shops that the Belfast Pride festival is upon us.
It has become the largest cross-community parade through the capital centre, bringing a significant boost to the local economy and showcasing the best of Belfast to a global audience.
But, it wasn’t always like this. The first Belfast Lgbtq+ fest Parade was held in 1991 and consisted of about 100 brave heroes of our community moving fairly sharpish through the city, significantly outnumbered by anti-LGBT protestors.
The protesters are still there of course; their numbers ever dwindling, but they cannot even be seen by those parading, such is the throng of supporters at every stage along the route.
Belfast Pride isn’t just a parade. It is a 10-day festival of art, music, political debate, sport,
Belfast Pride 2019
Belfast Pride had its first appearance way back in 1991, since then it has grown year on year to become the biggest cross-community event in Northern Ireland. This year it is gearing up to be no different with growing numbers on last year thousands are expected to take to the streets of Belfast City Centre for the annual Self-acceptance Parade.
Belfast Pride is a 10 day Festival which takes place from 26th July to 4th August. There are plenty of events happening all over Belfast so you’ll be sure to find something right up your street.
The LGBTQ+ community and anyone else who wishes to join in on the festivities is in for a treat with event organisers all over Northern Ireland bringing you an impressive display of talents. Belfast Pride has organised multiple Big Gay Walking Tours which last 90 minutes.
“Using images, stories and musical memories you will experience what it was like to grow up Queer in Belfast from the time when homosexuality was illegal right through the troubles up to the present day.”
You can buy tickets for the walking tourshere.

Photos from Belfast’s historic, poignant Pride
Pride this year has been tinged by the fervent spirit of a generation in anger and pain, following the tragic death of correspondent Lyra McKee. McKee, a brilliant news writer and reporter who keenly captured the issues of the ‘ceasefire babies’, was killed by dissident Republican gunfire in Derry in April. Reading her devastating, brave “letter to my 14-year-old self”, her writing highlights a message of love, acceptance, and solidarity for a future NI and its LGBTQ society. The recent moves towards change in the law show a shift that McKee should own been alive to see and celebrate.
Captured in Eilish McCormick’s kinetic range of photography, there’s a spectrum of joy and hope for a brighter future. For the thousands out celebrating, up and down Belfast’s Royal Avenue, on the stage of queer bar Maverick, or in the depths of a dockside queer rave, this Pride is a party, a activism, and prophecy.
