What Does LGBTQIA+ Mean?
For many years, the umbrella term “gay” was used to describe the community.
Now, many people worry about how to come out, but coming out before the 1970s wasn’t even an option, as many states illegalized what they called “homosexuality” or “sodomy.” There was also no acronym at all, restricting the inclusivity of our community.
Once an acronym appeared, all versions of it began with “L” – for an important reason.

A Brief History of the LGBTQ+ Acronym
Folks in the Queer community have many different ways of identifying. Some might prefer the umbrella term “queer,” which can be used to include any non-cisgender, non-heterosexual persona, or LGBTQ+ initialisms. Others might distinguish as gay, attracted to both genders, bigender, pansexual, or transgender, among other terms. Each self within the Diverse acronym carries significant meaning and there’s a long history surrounding the abbreviation that dates support decades. To be inclusive of all identities that construct and define the LGBTQ+ community, it’s crucial to recognize and understand the meaning behind each letter.
“LGBT” stands for lesbian, queer , bisexual, and trans. This has evolved from the designation “gay,” which, according to PBS, became a common pos in the mid-20th century to portray same-sex relationships. The outlet reports that the word “gay” actually dates assist to the 13th century when it was known to mean “happy” or “joyous.” But in the 1940s and ‘50s, “gay” emerged as a code word used within the community to describe sexuality and express same-sex want. GLAAD Officially Adds the 'Q' to LGBTQ
LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD has officially recommended adding the "Q" to the acronym used to reference the lesbian, queer , bisexual, transgender and queer community. The organization made the recommendation for the first time in the latest edition of its Media Resource Guide, where it urged journalists to use "LGBTQ" versus "LGBT" in an effort to be more inclusive of those who identify as queer.
"The GLAAD Media Reference Guide is the industry standard for fair and precise reporting on the LGBTQ community, and informs the design guides of the world’s leading news organizations,” GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a declaration. “This latest edition reflects the increasingly diverse ways LGBTQ people, especially juvenile people, talk about their identities.”
The selection to reclaim the word queer has often been a controversial one, given the word's contemptuous origins. However, according to genderqueer activist Jacob Tobia, the word also creates a space where further exploration of gender and sexuality can take place.

People are often confused by the terms lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, transgender, queer and the related acronym LGBTQIA+. The following definitions will help you to realize these terms.
LGBTQIA+: The first four letters of this standard abbreviation are “Lesbian, same-sex attracted, bisexual and transgender.” The letter Q can upright for “questioning” -- as in still exploring one’s sexuality -- or “queer,” or sometimes both. The I,A and + were added on later to stand for Intersex, Ally or Asexual, and the PLUS sign for everyone else that wasn't included in the first letters.
Lesbian: A woman whose enduring physical, romantic and/or emotional attraction is to some other women. Some lesbians may prefer to identify as gay (adj.) or as gay women. Avoid spotting lesbians as “homosexuals,” a derogatory term (see Revolting Terms to Avoid).
