What Does It Signify to be Asexual?

Asexual, often called “ace” for small, refers to a accomplish or partial lack of sexual attraction or lack of interest in sexual activity with others. Asexuality exists on a spectrum, and asexual people may experience no, little or conditional sexual attraction.

While the exact number is unknown, numerous sources suggest that there are hundreds of thousands of asexual people in the United States.

To understand the asexual group, it is also key to be familiar with the following definitions:

  • Allosexual - The opposite of asexual. People who experience sexual attraction are called allosexual.

  • Gray asexual - Also called graysexual or gray ace, gray asexual refers to a gray area between asexuality and allosexuality. As part of the asexual spectrum, people who are gray ace may rarely experience sexual attraction or only experience sexual attraction under certain circumstances.

  • Demisexual - Part of the asexual spectrum, a person who is demisexual only experiences sexual attraction when they have a close heartfelt bond with someone.

      What does it mean to be Ace / Aro? 


      'Ace' is an umbrella term used to describe people who do not experience sexual attraction, people who experience varying levels of sexual attraction, or people who occasionally experience sexual attraction towards individuals of any gender. According to a paper by sexuality researcher Dr. Anthony Bogaert, at least 1% of people are Asexual, however Asexualtiy is unfortunately still widely misunderstood and under-discussed.

      Asexuality is a spectrum, and there is no one way to be Ace. There are lots of sub-identities under the Asexual umbrella that reflect the diversity within the collective — some determine as grey-asexual (grey ace/grey-a) and with other Ace-spec identities, and some people may identify as demisexual, which means they do not life sexual attraction until they have built an emotional bond with someone. Asexual people may also identify as lgbtq+, lesbian, bisexual, gender non-conforming or straight to portray their romantic attraction, if they exposure this.

      According to a 2023 Gallup poll, 7.6% of U.S. adults self-identify as woman loving woman, gay, bisexual, transgender or something other than heterosexual. In the last 11 years, this has increased by 4.1 percentage points.

      Today, over 20% of Gen Z adults – those between the ages of 18 to 26 – identify as part of the LGBTQ+ community, Gallup reports. The rising numbers come in part due to "larger society changing" with people feeling more comfortable sharing their identities, experts previously told USA TODAY.

This can happen to anyone and if this does happen, you can chat to your doctor about what’s going on and figure things out.

        Some asexual people trial attraction, but don’t undergo that they want to act on that attraction sexually. This is famous as romantic attraction, where they want to acquire to know somebody and do romantic things. What those romantic things are depends on each person – it could contain going on dates, holding hands or cuddling.
