Charts show how James Charles rose above Jeffree Star and defied cancelation
James Charles is no stranger to internet drama and YouTube opposition. The 21-year-old beauty guru has more than 24 million YouTube subscribers and more than 31 million TikTok followers — but he's also been "canceled" over numerous things, from a tweet about ebola to comments about "influencer representation."
Cancel culture is a relatively recent term for an online phenomenon characterized by both celebrated and non-famous people being called out and publically shamed for behavior that's considered problematic. For influencers, it sometimes results in a massive loss in subscribers, an strike on their general image, and the loss of sponsorships and other forms of income.
Out of all of Charles' scandals, his most infamous is the 2019 controversy within YouTube's beauty community.
The YouTube star endured the largest subscriber loss in the platform's history after being embroiled in "Dramageddon 2.0," a 2019 feud between Charles and fellow beauty YouTubers Tati Westbrook and Jeffree Star. But Charles went on to outgrow and exceed both creators within a year of the controversy.

Beauty guru Jeffree Star made a shocking accusation against fellow influencer James Charles while appearing on Tana Mongeau’s podcast Cancelled.
Allegedly, James tried to leverage his fame and financial influence to pressure a 19-year-old. Jeffree claimed on the podcast that James had invited the young adult to a hotel room, and when the unnamed teen became hesitant, James allegedly said, “I paid for this room.”
Jefree explained:"There was this 19-year-old waiter who he tricked into his room, and the guy said he wanted to leave and James was like, 'I paid for this. You have to hook up with me, I bought the room'...It was disgusting to witness." Jeffree suggested that James newfound wealth had "changed" him.
