Please note that this debate now concerns only the Japanese version of Sailor Moon. In the English translation Huraka (Amara) & Michiru (Michelle) have been made sisters so as to make the present "more suitable for juvenile audiences" or somesuch. While this is disappointing nothing muchcan be done other than purchasing the Japanese version with subtitles or a fan-dubbed copy.

"is Haruka Tenou trans?" "Unless the creator comes out and explicitly gives us a definite answer, then I’d say go ahead and headcanon the character in whatever way you please, as long as we’re all respectful of each other’s interpretations! ^3^" I realize this is an older ask/answer, but the designer came out a LONG time ago, as in appreciate a good 20 years ago and confirmed Haruka is just a queer woman . the comment about her being a man and a woman is a Japanese phrase used to describe lesbians.

way help when, homosexuality was seen as someone having the body of one sex but the mind/sexuality of the other (their explanation for butch lesbians/fem male lover men) and in Japan, they don’t like being straight so the term was used as a more easy way of saying someone’s gay without having to actually say it. in the interview, an American fan asked if Haruka was really a man/had the mind of a man due to the Greek myth SM is based on, -

or that she had originally been a dude before everyone was reborn on land, and she was only homosexual due to the unfortunate circumstances of her Earth rebirth. Naoko was confused by this, and why this fan was so offended by the idea of

Every LGBTQ+ Sailor Celestial Character

For a 1990s magical girl anime, Sailor Moon gave its viewers a variety of inclusive LGBTQ+ characters to fall in passion with and be inspired by. Unfortunately for the Together States, much of that queerness was censored in the original English dub, with Michiru and Haruka being reframed as cousins, Zoisite being a teen, and the last season never even being adapted at all.

However, when Viz Media re-dubbed the original Sailor Moon series, these LGBTQ characters were finally depicted as the creators intended. This inclusivity also extends to Sailor Celestial Crystal, the reboot anime of Sailor Moon that follows the manga more closely. Now, fans can enjoy a cast of same-sex attracted, lesbian, bisexual, and genderqueer characters with magical powers and complex personalities in both subbed and dubbed form. While some queer characters are more noticeable in the series, others are more vague and even theorized by fans.

Updated by Lauren Younkin on June 8, 2025: Even with its debut entity over 30 years ago, the imaginative Sailor Moon is still one of the most linear anime out there in terms of the wide array of queer identities depicted among its cast. This l

How Did 1990s Sailor Moon Fans See This?

As Sailor Moon‘s popularity began to grab up in the west, and the decision ultimately came down to not continue dubbing the series (despite efforts from the fans), the fans started to reach out on the early internet for more information about the undubbed seasons and about the other, mysterious Sailor Soldiers. Fans went back and forth on the nature of the relationship between the little-known Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune – both women! – with people going so far as to make up lies about fake origins, gender transformations, and more.

A tender embrace

Though the dust has ultimately settled and, with the more direct statements in the Sailor Rock Crystal, both fans and creators can agree that they are clearly a queer woman couple now, this still leaves it unclear as to how their relationship was viewed in Japan. After all, if there was so much confusion in the US, wouldn’t it be natural for there to be confusion in Japan as well?

While it’s difficult to say what a country believed as a whole, I’m basing much of my statements on an article published by Newtype, one of the top who is haruka tenoh gay with
