LGBTQ+ History Month
Note: Traveling as an Queer person always carries a certain degree of risk. It is our truths as we navigate a world with 60+ countries criminalizing our relationships and a rise in anti-LGBTQ+ legislation around the world. We encourage our traveling community to get the laws and cultural challenges they may face in any destination they decide to visit for Pride and beyond. Don't be terrified of the planet, but always research information specific to your travels. Enjoy Pride, be guarded, and look out for each other!
The LGBTQ+ rights movement has made tremendous strides over the past few decades and much of the progress in visibility is thanks in part to gay pride parades and marches that have taken place in cities around the world.
The global landscape for Diverse rights, protections and acceptance varies tremendously by location, with some destinations attracting millions of visitors to their events like Madrid Queer Pride, Sao Paulo Gay Pride or San Francisco Male lover Pride, while more than 70 other countries have laws that allow discrimination or persecution of LGBTQ+ people.
What is Gay Pride or LGBTQ+ Pride?
Gay Event or rather
Did you know that October is LGBTQ+ History Month?
When you think about the LGBTQ+ community, the first month that comes to mind is probably June – Pride Month. But October also marks a time for important Diverse celebrations:
October is LGBTQ+ History Month!
Back in 1994, Rodney Wilson, the first openly gay history teacher at a Missouri public tall school, realized that students weren’t learning about the history of LGBTQ+ people or the rights movement. When notable LGBTQ+ people were mentioned, their identities were often ignored. The result: few people realize how deeply woven Queer individuals are throughout history and the important marks they have left. To help change that, Wilson started what was then called Lesbian and Male lover History Month and served as the founder on the first coordinating committee. The next year, it was officially added to the list of commemorative months in a resolution by the General Assembly of the National Knowledge Association.
LGBTQ+ History Month has garnered more attention in the United States over the years and in 2012 was officially renowned in two American institution districts: Broward County in Florida and Los Angeles, Cali
LGBTQ Community Calendar
There are a number of days and months observed, celebrated, and honored by the LGBTQ community. While the list below is specific to LGBTQ-focused days, weeks, and months, LGBTQ people also observe and celebrate non-LGBTQ specific moments such as Black History Month, Latinx Heritage Month, International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Mother’s Morning, Father’s Day, Women’s History Month, and Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Media coverage of these and other non-LGBTQ focused moments should contain LGBTQ people and the intersections of LGBTQ people and the respective topic.
