Tony Gray and Keith Liles’ reception earns national award for its Broadway-musical theme.

By Henry V. Thiel

Anthony “Tony” Gray and Keith Liles met 10 years ago through the ManKind Project, a men’s self-development group. “We had joint friends in the group, and our paths crossed at different trainings and service projects over the years,” says Liles, who serves as clinical director and program manager for Harris County’s STAR Drug Court Program.

It was during a social dinner in October 2007 that they first recognized a deeper attraction that would lead to the type of connection neither had expected.

When Gray, an accountant in the oil industry, finally worked up the courage to ask Liles out, he learned that Liles’ heart belonged to another—Baylor University. To this day, Liles jokes that Gray is first in his life “behind Baylor.”

The two were as different as two men could be. “Keith is a proactive planner who will have every detail scheduled weeks or even months in advance,” Gray says. “I, on the other hand, can plan ahead but typically perform not. In the early days, his intense focus on planning and my carefree spontaneity resulted in much friction.”

I saw Wickedthis weekend, and I can’t stop talking about it. I saw the musical on Broadway for the first time when I was 16-years-old, and I am now 32-years-old, DOUBLE the age I was then. I’ve loved Wicked for all of my adult life and then some. If you’re wondering if I cried, I did, obviously, but the tears were because we have to wait a whole year to hear Cynthia Erivo’s version of “No Great Deed” and Erivo + Ariana Grande’s version of “For Good.” Two-part films should be banned, especially when it comes to movie musicals!!!!

One thing that connects all of the current editors of Autostraddle is that we all have a deep adore for and background in musical theater. I went to a performing arts high school where I studied musical theater, Riese went to THEE executing arts boarding school, and Drew was also a theater dork. We all have unhealthy relationships to the television program Glee. All of this is to say we’re very aware of the longstanding tradition of musical theater being dominated by the gays. In high institution, the stage was the one space where homosexuals were at the uppermost of the food chain. And yet, we w

Yikes, I’m extremely back-logged with blog posts… but they’ll come hot and hefty from now on, I promise.

Let’s go endorse in time, to our Wicked Grounds drag production party. Then I’ll race through the best Gothic, alternative and LGBT nightlife in San Francisco. Sounds good? Strike a pose, vogue, and let’s go-go-GOTH.

You’ll recall that some of my best friends and I gathered in San Francisco over Memorial Afternoon Weekend (you can study all our SF adventures to date).

We learned a big travel lesson: it’s extremely stressful to travel during this American public holiday, since the rest of the state is doing the equal. Hotels were booked compact, traffic was choked up… It took far too many hours to choose up this birthday cake with a boot on it (don’t ask why) and drive the limited distance to the venue.

Still, Die Schwarze Frau managed to get dolled up, and vamped in the alleyway before her big American debut.

We got to Wicked Grounds, the San Francisco kink cafe, and immediately felt at home. The cosmos is a gathering-place for the alt community, and has regular events such as themed munches. Plus, they se
