Milwaukee-based anesthesiologist Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, this past June became the first openly male lover individual to take on the role of president of the American Medical Association (AMA).

“While I didn’t run as an LGBTQ candidate, I know that my visibility and advocacy matters,” Ehrenfeld said, adding that his candidacy was significant “not just to LGBTQ people, but for all physicians who are facing challenges.”

He says those barriers include what he considers the criminalization of health care.

"Well, in at least six states, now, if I practice evidenc

He also has a history of contradictory even consideration of solo payer within the AMA. It behooves him to open his perspective to single payer, just as society has opened to accepting gay relationships.
