Jude Law candidly talks about Dumbledore potentially becoming a homosexual icon now that his sexuality has been further explored in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The second installment from the spinoff series introduces fans to a young Albus Dumbledore at a time where he was still the Hogwarts' Defense Against The Dark Arts professor. It also shines a bright on the complex history between him and Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), who made his shocking debut towards the end of Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them.

Inching fans towards the main Harry Potter timeline, the sequel is directed by David Yates with the story written by J.K. Rowling. While reviews hold been mixed thus far,Crimes of Grindelwald is already a smash hit at the box office with over $250 million in ticket sales in its opening weekend. The film ended on a promising record as it teases a bigger involvement from Dumbledore as the hunt for Grindelwald continues.

The third 'Fantastic Beasts' production finally addresses Dumbledore's sexuality front and center — nearly 15 years after J.K. Rowling first revealed he's gay

In 2007, "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling made a remark that would echo in the franchise's fandom for years to come. Speaking at Carnegie Hall that year, she said that she had "always thought of Dumbledore as gay" — and that the affair between him and his teenage friend Gellert Grindelwald had been romantic.

Since then, Dumbledore's sexuality has only explicitly existed outside of any of the franchise's main properties, and Rowling's words had never been confirmed on screen. She hinted in 2016 that the character's queerness would play a role in the "Fantastic Beasts" films, telling reporters to "watch this space," Time Magazine reported at the time.

Almost fifteen years after Rowling first confirmed Dumbledore's sexuality, it's finally made it to the big screen.

Rowling Lets Dumbledore Out of the Closet

Oct. 20, 2007 — -- Well, it's official. Albus Dumbledore, a hero of the phenomenally popular Harry Potter series and headmaster of the wizarding school Hogwarts, is gay.

That's right, Harry's mentor and father-figure would favor a nice wizard to a hot witch any day.

In a surprising new Potter twist, creator J.K. Rowling outed Dumbledore at New York's Carnegie Hall in front of 2,000 Potter fans during a question and reply session Friday night.

After reading an excerpt from the seventh installment of her series, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," one young fan asked if Dumbledore had ever loved anyone.

"Dumbledore is gay, actually," replied Rowling.

She was initially met with a surprised silence but ultimately the audience erupted in cheers for several minutes prompting Rowling to add, "I would have told you earlier if I knew it would make you so happy."

Rowling went on to explain that Dumbledore fell for Gellert Grindelwald, his childhood companion with similarly brilliant wizarding skills, who eventually went over to the dim side and became the predecessor to the i

Will Dumbledore be openly same-sex attracted in 'Fantastic Beasts 2'?

Harry Potter author JK Rowling never made a private of the fact that, while she was writing, she always pictured master magician and Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore as queer . This side of the old wizard's personality was never made clear in the books or the original run of movies, to the disappointment of some. Could the promised sequel to Rowling's recent movie, 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them', remedy that?

We already knew that 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' - which is arrange in 1920s New York and follows magical naturalist and Hogwarts pupil Recent Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) - would be just the first of five movies. We also knew that Dumbledore would make an appearance in the first sequel, though we've no idea how big a role he'll have, or who'll be playing him (though we reckon Benedict Cumberbatch could be the perfect choice). Albus will be a younger dude in this era - somewhere in his 40s, by our calculations - and less caught up in his work, so he'll presumably have more time to dedicate to personal matters.

'You will notice Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man,' Rowling told a pr albus dumbledor era gay
