22 LGBTQ+ Pride events in Iowa (3 brand new!) in 2024
June is Queer Pride Month. If you’re looking for Pride events in Iowa in 2024, here are 22 of them.
The first Pride was in 1970, on the one-year commemoration of the Stonewall Uprising, which happened outside of the Stonewall Inn—a bar in Recent York City—on June 28, 1969.
To be sure, Queer activists had been organizing pickets prior to Stonewall. But Stonewall proved a tipping point: In 1970, thousands of activists marched in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles in 1970 (and in Iowa Town, too!),and the movement grew in the years to come.
These days, Prides are less protest action and more mainstream party, featuring family-friendly events backed by plenty of corporate sponsorship.
Iowa used to be more friendly than most states; we were only the third state in the nation to allow legal same-sex marriage, after a court decision, in April of 2009—six years before the US would pursue suit, in June of 2015.

In Honor of Pride Month - A Little History...
The History of Pride Month & the Uprising at the Stonewall Inn
During this month of Pride, we thought it might be a good idea to offer some historical context to what has change into such a distinguishable and celebratory month for so many members of the LGBTQIA+ community. This year marks the 52nd year since the first Identity parade was organized by Brenda Howard, a multi-attracted activist; however, Pride month was first recognized on a national level by President Bill Clinton in 1999 and 2000. During his term, President Barack Obama declared the month of June LGBT Identity festival Month. This declaration is the result of a decades long battle for equality after a valiant group of LGBT people members decided to grab a stand in Recent York City.
On June 28, 1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn, a widespread gay bar on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village, New York City. During this time, in every state but Illinois, acts of homosexuality were illegal and bars and restaurants that publicly served or had employees that identified as part of the LGBT community risked organism shut down. The LGBTQ+ rights movement has made tremendous strides over the past few decades and much of the progress in visibility is thanks in part to gay pride parades and marches that have taken place in cities around the world.
