Struggling with depression, a recent breakup, and the stigma that came with his HIV diagnosis in 2016, he went exist on Blued to exhibit his everyday life — eating in a restaurant, shopping in a department store, or singing while driving his car. Sometimes he even livestreamed himself sleeping. “I don’t need to be looking for sex all the time,” said the 33-year-old, from Thailand’s southern city of Hat Yai. “When I feel lonely but I don’t want to speak with anybody, I just get on livestreaming, and I feel there are many people staying with me.”

"The homosexual culture is not very open in Russia," says Nick, who says he already knew he was gay by the time he was a teenager. By contrast, Shanghai, where he lived for his first few years in China, is place to a vibrant gay scene, with a number of active gay bars and LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community groups. Although the society is smaller in Shenzhen, Nick still has a number of friends with whom he feels comfortable sharing his sexual orientation.

But it isn't just the community that keeps him here; Nick admits that he has a certain predilection for Chinese guys, which has served as another motivation to stay.

"I favor Asian people. I like foreigners too, but only as good friends," he says. "I perceive Chinese people are hotter. I can't say it's [them being] exotic. I think the reason I like them is they are always happy to
