Critics Consensus: It may not illuminate much of its subject's inner life, but Halston should still establish a comfortable fit for viewers in search of an entertaining fashion documentary.

SUMMARY

Considering the quality, quantity, and diversity of films distributed under the Amazon Studios banners, GLAAD has given Amazon a FAIR grade.

Amazon continues to release high-profile film content onto its streaming platform Amazon Prime Video. Many of these contain LGBTQ leads, including GLAAD Media Award-winning teen drama Anything’s Possible, a GLAAD List script honoree starring a Black transgender woman, and My Policeman, a GLAAD Media Award nominee that tells a decades-spanning gay love story. There are also several films tracked with supporting LGBTQ characters, such as The People We Abhor at the Wedding and Something from Tiffany’s. However, there were still opportunities to flesh out LGBTQ characters into larger roles. United Artists Releasing’s two LGBTQ-inclusive films, Bones and All and Women Talking, both left something to be desired with their portrayals of a queer man and trans guy respectively.

HISTORY

Amazon Prime Video and in-house Amazon Studios began distributing original content in 2013, followed by imaginative films in 2018. Amazon began negotiations to receive Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) in May 2021, allowing MGM to continue operating as a lab

The Best LGBTQ TV Shows and Movies on Amazon Prime
If one were to rank all the major streaming services by queerness, Amazon Prime Video would be a pretty tough one to pin down.

On the one hand, you have to give credit where credit is due: One of the service’s very first stabs at original programming was “Transparent,” which in turn was one of the first shows to star a trans main character. That show now has a lot of baggage, but it’s hard to understate its historical significance.

Beyond the thorny topic of “Transparent,” Prime Video does own a good track document of releasing shows with LGBTQ characters and centering their narratives on gender non-conforming themes; in particular, many of their shows concentrate on queer women, refreshingly avoiding the centering of gay men that defined queer TV for decades. In 2023, the streamer dropped a phenomenal limited series retelling of David Cronenberg’s “Dead Ringers,” starring Rachel Weisz as twin lesbian gynecologists.
