Once upon a day, there were two tall, blonde Dutch girls with a big dream: to travel the society together.

Not only did these girls contribute a friendship, but they also distributed a romance. And this romance made their families a bit concerned about their travel plans. You see, they had set their sights upon traveling the Trans-Mongolian Railway, the longest railway in the planet, which connects Moscow to the capital of China.

And Russia isn’t exactly the first country that comes to intellect when one thinks about LGBTQ-friendly journey destinations.

Well, you guessed it: I occur to be one of those girls. And I wasn’t about to authorize that stop me.

So, my girlfriend Roxanne and I did some research.

When searching for “LGBTQ” “Russia” and “travel” our friend Google set up that Lonely Space body has a ”gay and lesbian travellers” page for most countries. If you’re LGBTQI, you wouldn’t be blamed for thinking it might be best to steer clear of Russia on your travels, given the country’s hardline stance on sexual orientations that aren’t heteronormative. While same-sex relationships are legal in Russia, public expressions of homosexuality are frowned upon, backed up by anti-gay propaganda legislation. Homophobic attacks own also increased since the law was introduced in 2013.

Despite this, there’s a thriving, if outwardly prudent gay scene in St Petersburg and Moscow if you know where to look for it. So even if you’re there for a quick call on, like Richard Ayoade and actor/comedian Greg Davies’ Travel Man Moscow sojourn, you can have a rewarding time.

But you’ll need to practise discretion, vigilance and general commonsense while travelling in Russia. Here’s what you need to perceive to make your trip as smooth as possible.

Review the tour advisory and destination facts page of the place you plan to stop by . Check the Local Laws & Customs section.  This has information specific to travelers who may be targeted by discrimination or violence on the basis of sexual orientation.

Many countries only recognize male and female sex markers in passports.
