Infertility affects 1 in 6 adults around the world. Thanks to Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), such as In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), many families have been able to expand in ways they might not acquire thought possible. However, the cost of fertility treatment can often hinder someone's dreams of starting a family. Fortunately, California Governor Gavin Newsom has made strides to create these dreams more accessible for families across the Golden State by signing Bill SB729, regarding fertility treatment, into law.
California is a reproductive freedom articulate. As a national leader for increasing access to reproductive health care and protecting patients and providers, including those under assault in other states, I want to be clear that the right to fertility care and IVF is protected in California. In California, unmarried and lgbtq+ couples are ensured the same access to insurance coverage for fertility treatment, thanks to a bill signed into law in 2013.1
One of 15 states mandating infertility coverage,2 Maryland now appears to be following suit. A measure recently passed by both branches of state government3 removes an important restriction: The state had limited insurance coverage for IVF procedures to those using the husband’s sperm only—once again, a nonstarter for same-sex couples.
To qualify for the benefits, lesbians must go through six rounds of unsuccessful artificial insemination and show an underlying medical condition hindering thriving pregnancy. The bill is awaiting the governor’s signature to become law.

The state of Recent York has linked the ranks of 17 other states that have mandated insurance providers cover fertility treatment, operative January 1, 2020. In New York, specifically, all Grand Group insurance providers will cover up to three cycles of IVF for people with a diagnosis of infertility. Additionally, the mandate leaves out providers in fully-insured small team plans (companies with less than 100 employees), employers with self-insured plans, Obamacare and Medicaid. People enrolled in so-called “self-insured” organization health insurance plans (primarily used by large corporations and unions) are executed by federal law, so the New York Mention mandate does not employ to them.

TRENTON – Governor Phil Murphy today signed A5235/S3627 to expand health insurance coverage requirements for infertility services. The bill requires that certain personal sector health insurers, which are regulated by the State and which provide pregnancy-related benefits to groups of more than 50 people, the State Health Benefits Program, and the School Employees’ Health Benefits Program, to provide coverage for any services comparable to infertility in accordance with the American Community for Reproductive Medicine guidelines and as determined by a physician.
Covered services include, but are not limited to, different types of in vitro fertilization, intrauterine insemination, genetic testing, and embryo transfers. The bill mandates coverage of infertility services for a partner of a person who has successfully reversed a voluntary sterilization, and further provides that nothing in the definition of “infertility” may be used to deny or postpone treatment to any individual, regardless of relationship status or sexual orientation, as well as prohibits health insurance carriers from imposing restrictions concerning the coverage of infert
