Fight over Pride flag, LGBTQ rights lands at national parks

Pride flags could not be flown at any facilities operated by the Interior Department or EPA, including the 424 sites owned by the National Park Service, under a spending bill by House Republicans that’s set for a committee vote on Wednesday.

The bill, which also calls for deep spending cuts for the agencies, would only grant “official flags,” including U.S. flags, POW/MIA flags and those that represent a state, tribe or agency. The measure cleared a subcommittee on a voice vote Thursday and now heads to the full Dwelling Appropriations Committee.

While the rider does not specifically mention Event flags, Maine Rep. Chellie Pingree, the top Democrat on the House Interior and Environment Appropriations Subcommittee, said “it’s clear that the intent of this language is to halt the celebration of LGBTQ+ Americans.”

“I am strongly opposed to any attempt to discriminate against the LGBTQ+ society and as ranking member I aim to fight this provision,” Pingree said in a remark to E&E News.

If approved by the full Congress, the bill could gravity Stonewall National Monument, an NPS site in New York dedicated to t

Park Ridge church receives threats after Moms for Liberty posts photo of its Pride flag

  • The social media posting, by a local Moms for Liberty chairperson, said the Pride flag indicated support for pedophilia.
  • The post has since been deleted, but the church says the comments on the post prompted them to reach out to law enforcement.
  • Moms For Liberty is a conservative, parental rights nonprofit that has been labeled a detest group by the Southern Poverty law Center.

The First Congregational United Church of Christ in Park Ridge told its congregation this weekend that it had received threats stemming from a social media upload by the head of the Bergen County chapter of Moms for Liberty, a group known for opposing inclusive curricula in academy and supporting book bans.

The post by local chapter chair Alexandra Bougher, later deleted, included a photo of the church's Progress Pride flag and commentary from Bougher suggesting that it promotes pedophilia. The flag in question is an intersex inclusive Progress Pride flag, but the post — and many of its comments — suggested that it included support for "minor-attracted persons," which is not true.

Gay pride flag ripped down from dwelling of activist on Long Island

LONG BEACH, Long Island (WABC) -- A veteran gay rights activist claims she was the victim of a hate crime when a male ripped a male lover pride flag from her apartment door on Long Island.

"I'm scared about retaliation, I'm scared about what this guy could do next if he already did something appreciate that, so right now I'm scared for myself and my daughter and family," said 34-year-old Lauren, a mom, school teacher, DJ, and gay rights activist.

Late Thursday nighttime, just before midnight, someone stole her gay pride flag from her apartment in Long Beach.

She says there were other flags in her complex, but only hers was ripped down.

"He walked past other flags, American flags, Rangers flags, and he chose to aim the gay flag," she said.

There are numerous surveillance cameras which captured unlike angles of the theft. The male is seen exiting the complex with a neighbor, then exits alone with the flag in his hand.

Lauren has filed a police report and has learned the mention of the male from her neighbor. But so far there has not been an arrest, which means she remains on edge, not sure i
