The Dec 26 tsunami killed 36 members of the Sri Lankan gay group Companions On A Journey. Twelve additional members remain unaccounted for. Homes of 112 group members were destroyed by the waves.
“These are numbers that we have received so far,” says Sherman de Rose, the group’s executive director. “The coastal line which the tourists frequent is destroyed entirely. So, along with it, whatever the gay-friendly places were, were destroyed as well. Intellect you, we didn’t have any out and open gay/lesbian spaces, although it was accepted in tourist areas where a lot of LGB [lesbian, homosexual, bisexual] tourists from Western Europe and Scandinavian countries check in for holidays.
“Fortunately for the gay community,” de Rose says, “the tsunami didn’t make its appearance in the evening; otherwise lots of gays cruising along the beaches would have perished.”

Malaysia's opposition leader said Tuesday a quake-tsunami that killed thousands in neighbouring Indonesia was "punishment from Allah" for the activities of gay people, sparking a storm of criticism.
Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who heads a party which disoriented power in Muslim-majority Malaysia at historic elections in May, made the remarks in parliament as he warned about the growing influence of the country's gay community.
It was the latest sign of a backlash against homosexuals in Malaysia. In recent months officials - including the prime minister - own spoken out against homosexual rights and two lesbians were caned for breaking Islamic laws that disallow same-sex relations.
Ahmad Zahid, a former deputy former premier who is now facing jail after being arrested for corruption, said that "in Palu, where there was recently an earthquake and tsunami, it was said that there were more than 1,000 (people) deeply interested in such (LGBTIQ+) activities.
"As a result, the whole area was crushed. This is punishment from Allah."
