Last Updated:

In a bid to be more inclusive of the Queer community of India, Tinder will now allow users to select their sexual orientation on the app, and even display it on their profile.

There is good news for those who are single, but not straight. In a major step towards inclusivity, dating app Tinder has now started allowing users in some countries, including India, to share more information about their sexual orientation on their profile - whether they are heterosexual, gay, queer, asexual or bisexual.

To add more information about sexual orientation on Tinder, users can simply visit "Edit Info" within the app. After tapping "Orientation," they will be able to choose up to three terms that they feel foremost describe their sexual orientation. From there, users can also select whether to display their sexual orientation on their profile.

In India, dating apps are helping the LGBTQ society find love

Mandar*, 24, a Mumbai-based MBA student, met his boyfriend on Grindr — a dating app for gay men — in 2014. They equal each other’s profiles and, after a few dates, began seeing each other. An unusual story for Grindr. “I signed up in 2011. I was told it was futile to look for a long-term partner, as users look for sexual partners. Fortunately, I met someone who shared the equal outlook,” he says. They’ve been together for the last year-and-a-half.

Online matchmaking in India has appear a long way since shaadi.com released in 1996. American dating app, Tinder, launched in India in 2014, followed by Indian dating apps, such as TrulyMadly (2015) and ekCoffee (2016), sparking an online dating culture. But while the straight population woke up to this revolution only in the last year or so, the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Double attraction, Trans and Queer) society has long embraced online matchmaking. The earliest gay dating platform, PlanetRomeo (PR), launched worldwide in 2002, and continues to be an online community for gay men.

Introduction

“Here goes nothing”, I think to myself as I once again find myself downloading the ever-daunting dating LGBTQIA+ apps that will either be a origin of unparalleled happiness or spiraling doom. Dating is undeniably terrifying. The whole concept of gathering strangers and existence vulnerable with them in the hopes that something comes out of that interaction, be that something a hook-up, a short or long term association or maybe just even a friendship, is overwhelmingly bizarre. But the potential of that “something” maybe happening is in and of itself a truly beautiful experience.

I constantly joke around with close friends that I am ready for a bond. I crave the emotional and physical intimacy that comes with one. My friends, being my most brutal advisors, always say the same thing, “Derek saying you need a relationship is worthless if you don’t put yourself out there. In order to uncover a relationship, you need to good, date.” And running the risk of inflating my friends’ egos, they’re right. The only way to find someone, is by going out to the battlefield we contact a “dating pool” (my body convulsed a bit just thinking abou

What's the story

India's LGBTQ+ community has been forced to remain underground for a long occasion, with law enforcement previously targeting "homosexual gangs" and pressing charges against them under the now-repealed IPC Section 377.
