Gay robin hood
The Sunday Times story boiled this down to Was Robin Hood Same-sex attracted ? There was a fine colour pic of ultra-handsome Errol Flynn and an astutely selected illustration by Howard Pyle, the very influential American illustrator of 1883, showing Robin and Friar Tuck playing horsey in the liquid. The text focused on the sharp shock of the gay charge, but also, as suits a serious Sunday paper, had research on show: the distinguished Barrie Dobson, Professor at Cambridge, said that homosexuality in the medieval period was not necessarily as repressed as you might think, and there was a nice round-up from the present Earl of Huntingdon saying goodness gracious me.
As I had expected there was fall-out. My wife trained as a journalist on a Rupert Murdoch folio in Australia, and we have some experience of how a new story can suddenly start a media feeding frenzy, but this was bigger than both of us. I got back from my tour-preparing trip on a Sunday to find that a few wily journalists had got my number from security at my university. I wonder what they think security means. First up were the BBC, awake to the world as ever. One call was from Radio 5, the brainless lightweight morning chat
One of the most entertaining things about history is asking: “what if?” That can cause all kinds of chaos. Additionally, there’s no quicker way to freak people out than to question the sexuality of a historical figure or at least portray them in some way different than the idealized picture of that person. There are fewer iconic characters than Robin Hood. So when you seek , “was Robin Hood gay?” You’re pretty much asking for trouble.
Yet, author NB Dixon has done just that. In a fresh series of Kindle novels, beginning with The Heir of Locksley, he (or she, cause we don’t know do we?) examines not only what we know about the celebrated outlaw, but the relationships with his band of “Merry Men.”
Now, I could make jokes ( What, the emerald green tights weren’t a giveaway? Okay, sorry. I’m done acting like a 12 year old now.) but if Alexander the Great, Richard the Lion Heart and other historical figures haven’t already proven that having unconventional sexuality and entity a badass aren’t mutually exclusive, I don’t understand what will.

But you can't keep a fine hero down and he's back in the news thanks to a guided walk in Nottingham called the Gay Robin Hood tour. It examines the alleged homosexual origins of the man and has been researched by Nottingham historian Tony Scupham-Bilton. Help playing audio/video Tony believes Robin's origin dates back 700 years. It revolves around the relationship of two real life characters - Sir William Neville, the constable of Nottingham castle, and Sir John Clanvowe, a poet. According to the historian the two were as good as hitched, even though Sir William had a wife, Elizabeth. "The two men were soldiers who'd fought in the One Hundred Years War. They formed a seal friendship. It's commonly standard now that they were a gay couple." Did Robin really prefer Little John to Marian?
