Paris In the 1830s, mid regency period, in the ever-growing metropolis of Paris the streets were literally flowing over with excrements. So crafty city dwellers made a living of hiring out portable wooden bridges to people to cross the mess in the street (“passe paye”) and, while at it, offered services of cleaning up those who were unfortunate enough to have stepped into something. These went by the name of “decrotteurs”.  “Une crotte” is a turd. Yep, “de-poopers”.

This synonyms evolved to indicate “bootblack” over moment and still exists in some french speaking countries, while the French cleaned up their language and go with “cireur des botte” now. And speaking of “cleaning up, once Paris got sewers, those formerly hauling wooden bridges over the flow of poop changed their job description to just cleaning and waxing shoes, which were now made predominantly of leather. Author's note:

This is a very short period tale of an older gentleman detecting the previously unsampled delights of sex with a handsome young man.

Valter Landgrave stumbled over his control feet as he left the tavern, to the tittering and edification of two ladies of the night. He'd fucked them both not long since but had wearied of them and would not bring them to his chambers tonight. Tonight, he was half gone, drunk on ale and too much port wine, and in need of something else to assuage his nameless hunger this bedraggled night.

Before competing, though, Jaecks learned how to polish boots out of necessity, working on her own shoes that she brought to study abroad in Europe.

"I walked everywhere, easily 10 miles a day," says Jaecks. "I had to carry out something with my boots, so I bought a can of polish and a toothbrush. Eventually, I bought supplies and started doing it for real."

Jaecks moved to Milwaukee in 1991 and took a job on the East Side shining shoes at the old University Footwear. She literally answered a sign that said "shoe shiner wanted." The ow
