Gay & Lesbian Center of Bakersfield

The mission of the Gay & Lesbian Center of Bakersfield is to provide a sense of community, self-respect and hope to the local LGBTQ community. We believe that gay, sapphic, bisexual and transgender people of all ages warrant to celebrate and be proud of who they are, and live packed and rewarding lives as productive and contributing members of society. Our purpose is to empower individuals in achieving these objectives.

The Center seeks to enhance the well-being of LGBTQ persons by providing a positive environment and a place to find assist, as well as social and cultural programs and activities. The Center provides a safe, comfortable and inviting space for adults and teens to gather with friends and network. The Center serves LGBTQ seniors by providing and facilitating social and recreational activities to enhance their quality of life.

The Center is strengthening the connection between the LGBTQ collective and the entire Bakersfield area community through diversity education programs and a speaker’s series designed to foster a greater comprehending of sexual orientation, gender identity and gender utterance issues.

Situated between Fresno and Los Angeles, Bakersfield is the ninth-largest capital in California. For much of its history, Bakersfield has been known as a center for oil production and agriculture – but it is also so much more. A Bit of Bakersfield History

Bakersfield is the county seat of Kern County, California. Located in the San Joaquin Valley, it was initially founded along the Los Angeles and Stockton Road in 1869 by Thomas Baker, who sought to reclaim swamplands along the nearby Kern River. For much of its early years, Bakersfield was an agricultural trade center for the mines of the Sierra Nevada mountains in the Owens Valley.
