We have the bars and clubs broken down by neighborhood areas, as there is not anyone “gayborhood” in San Juan.  We highly praise getting around to glimpse the variety of bars and clubs.

CLOSEST TO COQUI DEL MAR gay hotel in San Juan Puerto Rico:

HATO REY:  This area has more local bars and tends to be a younger crowd.  Thursdays, aka, college night, is especially popular.  Amigos del Jangeo, El Cojo, Pal Frente and the newest, Meet Macarena, are all next door to eachother.

Atrévete bar and cafe is more women/ queer woman focused, but welcomes all.  The owners frequently host local queer artists and musicians. 

El Cojo: Local lgbtq+ bar and small same-sex attracted dance club on the strip of local bars.

Meet Macarena:  The newest LGBTQ hot spot/ gay block, a hybrid bar with swimming pool, jazz nights and dancing.  And just across from El Cojo.

Pal Frente:   Local gay lock on the strip of local bars.

La Cantina: Local gay Karaoke bar and restaurant.  Reasonable prices.  Laid back.

Celebrate Pride Across the Americas! Here’s Where You Can Party This June

LGBTQ+ celebration is worth celebrating all year round, but June is when the celebrations really take off.

This is the month when we honor and performance love to a group that perseveres in spite of ongoing discrimination. While there are gay parade celebrations and events all over the world, some of the best are right here in The Americas.

If you are a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, celebrate in one of these destinations in The Americas.

New York City, New York

All five boroughs have Celebration events, but the largest by far is in Manhattan on June 25. Each year, scores of people descend upon the borough for the festivities.

The first Pride protest took place in June 1970, a year after the Stonewall riots that launched the Gay Rights Movement. At that second, it was called the Christopher Street Liberation Evening March—a reflection of its political origins.

Some of those political leanings last, but the modern Movement march is really more of a massive lane party with scores of floats and spectators. This year, Billy Porter will be one of the Grand Marshals.

Visiting San Juan’s gay nightlife

My first night out in San Juan certainly wasn’t what I was expecting. I’d only arrived in Puerto Rico a few hours before—just enough moment to dip my feet into the Caribbean and hike barefoot on the beach.

Back at my gay-owned guesthouse, I got some recommendations for a darkness out. First interrupt was Calle Loiza—a long stretch of road in the Ocean Park neighborhood of San Juan. Multiple people had described the area to me as a “hipster neighborhood,” so I was excited to explore.

Along Calle Loiza, I found the standard trappings of any American travel destination. But, this is Puerto Rico, so things were also a bit… distinct. In a wonderful way!
