How A Generation Of Queers Found Their Way Through One Direction

In the arouse of Liam Payne’s tragic death, one fan reflects on the former One Direction luminary and how the male child band created space for gay fans to notice themselves…

By Jesse Boland

October 16, 2024, became an unexpected day of mourning for me and many of my friends. Not only did it mark the passing of British singer Liam Payne, who tragically died after falling from the third-floor balcony of his hotel suite in Buenos Aires, but for many of us it sealed a morbid closing to one of the brightest chapters of our adolescence.

Attempting to describe the grief of this decline to someone who did not belong to the 1D fandom feels onerous, as there are so few words to truly articulate this real-time bildungsroman of what we, the self-described Directioners, experienced during the turbulent chapter of our youth. It is my hope that whoever is reading this article from outside of the fandom approaches this piece with both empathy and curiosity for a impairment they thankfully cannot or have not yet experienced, but with the intent to better understand why for so many new women, and also lgbtq+ men, the loss of Liam Payne s

Louis Tomlinson responds to notify gay sex rumors broke up One Direction

Sasha Colby didn’t set out to become “your favorite kingly queen’s favorite drag queen.” It just kind of happened.

“You know, I was so stoned,” she admitted with a laugh, recalling the filming of her “Meet the Queens” promo. “We were about to sit down for the interview, and they were like, ‘Oh, just ponder of something, like a catchphrase you want to say.’” What came out was a now-iconic term that captured the truth: Colby is the queen’s queen, beloved by legends, adored by fans, and deeply respected in her craft. “It came out of the deep crevices in here,” she said, pointing to her head.

She thinks RuPaul might acquire planted the seed: “Ru had said on the main stage once, ‘You’re a drag queen’s flamboyant queen — you’re what drag queens watch.’ And maybe that stuck in my head and just kind of … pos association.”

And she’s only getting started.

After making history as the first out transsexual winner of “RuPaul’s Kingly Race” to headline a Live Nation tour, Colby is hitting the thoroughfare again this fall. Her “Stripped II” tour kicks off Sept. 16 in Seattle and wraps up in Hawaii, where she’ll bring her artistry complete circ

Move over Kylie: One Direction is Britain's gayest band

New analysis from YouGov Profiles data reveals that, among adult fans, One Direction is the music act with the strongest correlation to same-sex attracted men

Kylie Minogue and Madonna have had a equitable run with the mantle, but new YouGov study reveals that among senior music fans, One Guide is now the band with the most particularly gay enthusiasm.

Using information from the YouGov Cube – our connected statistics vault of over 120,000 different data points, unhurried from over 200,000 UK adults - we compared British men who name as gay to the rest of the population and pulled out the music artists that are most disproportionately popular among them. Liking One Guide is now the most standout feature of same-sex attracted mens' music tastes, ahead of Kylie and Madonna.

These aren't the music artists that are most widespread within the British homosexual community (that award goes to Sam Smith, actively liked by 15%) – but rather the artists that are most over-represented by it.

There are no official statistics for the size of the lesbian, gay and pansexual population in Britain, and the census has been viewed as an inappropriate method, due to insuffic

Now that the members of One Direction are going their separate ways for a little while, we're probably going to start seeing them in separate spaces. Liam Payne is kicking that idea into gear with his first solo magazine interview and cover with U.K. gay publication Attitude.

The 1D celebrity opens up about everything from the band's future to his heavy drinking and partying ways, holding nothing help from his fans. He even reveals that his association with alcohol not only caused him to gain weight but also became dangerous enough to spark an intervention.

"I started drinking a lot and I began to find a bit tubbier," he explains. "In fact, because of that I was getting fat jibes all the period, which hurt me...I'm not afraid to say I went through a lovely bad stage. And for that hour in my existence, that was flawless for me."

"That's what I wanted to do and so I enjoyed myself."

But Liam took it too far. He recalls a fan event in which he showed up "a little bit drunk."
